After many, many delays, mostly due to getting medical stuff ready for the Peace Corps. Cheezusrice this was a ton of work. So much red tape, forms, and other nonsense. My urinalysis came back positive for blood, so I had to get it redone. Unfortunately by this time, I was already in Charlotte. I thought it would be easy to get a UA done. I was wrong. So, so wrong.
Day Two.

Ok, where was I...

Blah blah biked through the mountains. Uphill sucks, downhill rocks. Reached crabtree falls, took a bath, enjoyed the sun, met some interesting people, slept next to the parking lot. Lost a spoon.

Speaking of eating, my cook system was pretty interesting. I learned how to make an alcohol stove out of a catfood can from a book, works great and is super light. Used that to boil water, with a windshield, and ate freeze-dried camp food - surprisingly tasty.

Part III – First Days

Sequentiality is overrated. Plus I don’t remember the exact sequence of events, so I’ll just give random things from here on out.

This first week is a blur, so much has happened in so short a time. I can barely remember the trip anymore, and I feel like I’ve been here for ages and ages.

Lots of things

I want to start off saying, that flies waking you up gets really old, really fast. And for the longest time, I couldn't figure out where they were coming from. All I knew is they were driving me crazy. They'd wake me up around 5, and then it'd be impossible to go back to sleep with all the buzzing, and little tickling legs landing on you. Yum. But! I've hit on a solution. If I leave the windows closed during the day, and open at night, it seems to do the trick. It's so nice to wa…

First Day of School

had to wake up early, no time for a nice, slow morning, sadly. Ah well. I've had plenty, and there's plenty more to come. Walked very briskly to school, took about 40 minutes. Even though it was a cool morning, my back was completely soaked on arrival. I was a bit late, but no worries, they were just having assembly. Which went on for another half hour after getting there. And then

April: Easter Vacation

Pics

Lots of things, a great time; I'm going to write a lot. Bear with me.

In essence, we had training, followed by about a week of vacation. A group of us had decided a while back to do a backpacking from Tsehlanyane (a national park) to Afriski (a ski resort - the only one in Lesotho.). We (optimistically) figured about 3 days, even though most of us had never done a long-distance backpacking trip before (including me, to my shame). We didn’t plan to spend any nights …

There’s tons to say, about not much at all. No big adventures, but lots of daily life stories and micro-stories. By the way, if you just hover your cursor over the footnote, it’ll pop up.

As a note that doesn’t fit anywhere, my home meal for the past couple of months (literally, I haven’t cooked anything else) has been onion and potatoe and egg hash. It’s a good thing I don’t easily tire of routine. Cooking for yourself is just not worth the effort, you know? Give me guests, and I’ll serve…

We were sent off to go stay at a current volunteers house and see a bit of their life.

Name of Rachel. She’s from Philly, and different from other, typical volunteers : much more urban – if that’s the right word. Much less outdoorsy, which I find to be interesting - that there are other types that survive and even thrive. She has less than a month to go, and has her life in a nice routine here. I just made proper coffee

As I write this , the cold rain trickling down the windows is sharpened by my knees feeling the cold through my wet pants. The sky is so uniformly grey, and the nearest trees on the hill are barely visible through the mist, a vision of an alpine winterland. The hum of the generator and the patter of rain on the tin roof mix with soft conversation to form a background noise as pleasant and grey as the weather outside

We traveled to this great hotel for the workshop. I've not much to say on the workshop itself, I'm not even really sure what it was all about, I was busy writing silly poems and playing Basotho Ultra-tac-toe I think it was mostly about us meeting our principals, and having cross-cultural sessions.
