u-Blox GPS-E1 Evaluation Kit

I found this at the October 18, 2026 MIT Swap for a few bucks. There's not much information available about the GPS-E1 development kit, but the GPS-MS1 GPS receiver module inside of it is fairly well known. It's based on the SiRFstar I/LX chipset, tracking 12 GPS satellites. My unit has firmware `1.3.1DKIT144` - I have seen references to newer versions, but haven't found any files yet. This receiver does not seem to suffer from the WNRO bug, within 10 seconds of connecting it to my home rooftop antenna it got a lock.

On the GPS-E1 breakout board there is a 2×36 0.1“ pin header, one strip is ground, the other is various connections to the GPS-MS1. There are quite a few jumpers on the board, as well as a socketed CR2477 lithium battery (still holding a good charge!), a small rectifier feeds a Traco DC-DC converter taking 9-18v to 5v, with another 3.3v regulator on the bottom of the board, making this thing very easy to power. There's a reset button and a firmware upload initiate button, as well as quite a few jumpers. One jumper (three pin J2) has an SPDT switch connected to it. I have not yet mapped out any of these jumpers, but it should be easy to do so given how simple the board is.

By default it sends the SiRF binary protocol, but it can be configured for NMEA. `gpsd` supports the SiRF binary protocol out of the box, so I have as of yet not reconfigured it. Eventually I plan to feeds it's PPS into my tinyGTC vs an LEA-M8T to see how the two compare.
